Emergency Medical Services

Grant Park Fire District is proud of the fact that we are at the forefront of prehospital care. Our staff of 35 paramedics and EMT’s are some of the best trained and experienced paramedics in the area. Grant Park is proud to have some of the most technically advanced EMS equipment in the area. Some of this highly advanced equipment includes: 12 lead EKG, IO drills, CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) just to name a few. In the early 2000’s, Grant Park was one of two Fire Districts chosen to perform a field study on the effects and success of using 12 lead EKG’s in the prehospital setting.

To provide quality EMS coverage to the 62 square miles of our District, we staff two Advanced Life Support ambulances. Our firefighters are cross trained as paramedics and EMT’s, giving us the flexibility to transition between fire and rescue emergencies to EMS incidents depending on service demands throughout the day.
The majority of our paramedics were trained at two area system hospitals: Provena St. Mary’s Hospital (Resource Hospital) and Riverside Medical Center both in Kankakee, IL. Paramedics are required to attend about one year of schooling and complete an additional 250 hours of clinical sessions in the emergency room, operating room, and intensive care units. Along with the hospital clinical hours, paramedic students are also required to complete 250 hours of field ride time in an ALS Ambulance setting. The system paramedic programs are ran in cooperation with the Kankakee Community College. To learn more about becoming a paramedic visit the Kankakee Community College website or contact Lt. Matt Shronts during business hours. Grant Park Fire District requires all firefighters to become EMT-Basic certified through the Illinois Department of Public Health within two years of their hire date.
